1838 GREAT BRITAIN Silver "2 PENCE" The FIRST YEAR of COINAGE for QUEEN VICTORIA
Description
This is an original, sterling silver, Two Pence from Great Britain. It was struck at the Royal mint in 1838 during the first-year coins were struck with the portrait of Queen Victoria.
The small silver 1 through 4 pence coins of Britain, now generally thought of as
"Maundy"
coins, were struck for normal circulation until 1820. After that only the 3 and 4 Pence continued to be produced for normal circulation. However, the 2 Pence here was also struck for circulation in British Guiana in 3 years, this year 1838, in 1843 and 1848.
The first
"Maundy Sets"
of all four coins were put together late in the reign of George III. At the Maundy Thursday ceremony, the poor would be given the number of Pence equaling the age of the monarch in these small silver coins. In 1838 there were just 4,158 Maundy Sets produced.
Weight: 0.97 Gram, 13 Millimeter, .925 Silver.
