The shipwreck of the Costa Concordia occurred on January 13, 2012, when the cruise ship of the same name struck the group of rocks known as the Scole, near the Island of Giglio, in Italy, at 21:45:07. The ship was owned by the shipping company Costa Cruises, of the Carnival Corporation & plc group, and was commanded by Francesco Schettino. It was one of the most serious shipwrecks in Italian history. Set sail from the port of Civitavecchia in the direction of Savona for the last leg of the "Profumo d'agrumi" cruise, in the waters of the Giglio Island she hit a rock, causing the opening of a leak about 70 meters long on the left side of the hull .
